Durham Cathedral

Durham Cathedral was founded in 995 by monks from the Island of Lindisfarne who fled when their home was invaded by Vikings. The cathedral dominates the Durham skyline and will be a familiar sight to regular rail travellers on the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh

The World Heritage Site stands next to Durham Castle, high above the medieval city centre where bustling and winding cobbled streets with cafés, artisan workshops, boutiques, galleries and museums just round the corner from relaxing walks and boat trips along the River Wear.
