YORK
The City of York dates back to Roman times and Roman, Viking and Norman influences can still be seen on the city today.
Wander round the city walls, which still virtually encircle the city, and a wealth of history awaits you. York Minster, which is over 800 years old, is the largest medieval cathedral north of the alps. The jorvik Viking Museum offers a living history of life in York at the end of the first millennium. Clifford’s Tower, built by William the Conqueror to defend the city, now offers stunning views of the local skyline.
The Castle Museum covers the city’s history from the Civil War to the Second World War and the National Railway Museum reflects the vital role York played in the expansion of Britain’s rail network.
The city has a wide variety of shops ranging from high street brands to small independent gift shops. The Shambles, a narrow fifteenth century street full of gift and craft shops, claims to be “Europe’s most visited street”.
